How to choose a boat trip in Tenerife

Start with the harbour. A trip from Puerto Colón suits anyone staying in Costa Adeje or Playa de las Américas; Los Gigantes is a long drive from the south resorts, and few of its boats collect from hotels. Then decide between a short trip and a half day with food and swimming.

  • Catamarans: more people on board, often a meal and a swim stop.
  • Sailing boats: smaller groups, depend more on the wind.
  • Cliff trips from Los Gigantes: shorter distance to the Masca coast and the cliffs.

Most of these boats also watch for whales and dolphins on the way. If that is the main goal, compare them on the whale-watching page.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a boat trip and a whale-watching trip?

Many trips do both. A whale-watching trip spends most of its time looking for cetaceans; a boat trip may add a long swim stop, snorkelling, a meal or sail along the cliffs. If seeing animals matters most, start with the whale-watching page.

Do boat trips include hotel pickup?

Some catamarans include a coach from the south resorts, and a few from the north on set days. Small boats and the Los Gigantes trips usually ask you to come to the harbour. The pickup row on each card shows what we found.

Can I go on a boat trip with small children?

The operators we checked publish their own age limits or prices by age; we have not assessed how each boat suits small children. Check the ages line and the operator’s own conditions before booking.

What if the sea is rough?

Operators can cancel or change a trip for sea conditions. What you get back depends on the operator and where you booked, so compare the cancellation row and keep the confirmation.

Which harbour should I choose?

The one closest to where you stay, unless the trip includes transport. Puerto Colón is in Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos is next to the ferry port, and Los Gigantes is on the west coast under the cliffs.

Which boat trips go to Los Gigantes?

Boats based in Los Gigantes harbour sail along the cliffs towards Masca bay. Some longer catamaran trips from Puerto Colón also head up the coast to Los Gigantes and Masca, which takes four hours or more. Each card shows the harbour and the route the operator describes.

What is the best boat trip in Tenerife?

It depends on what you want from the day: a short trip from the harbour nearest your hotel, a half day with a swim stop and food, or a route along the cliffs. The list is ordered by how complete our checked information is, not by a ranking of operators.
