Whale watching in Tenerife: compare trips, harbours and boats

Whale-watching trips leave from the south and west coasts. The useful questions are which harbour, how long you are at sea, whether they collect you, and whether the boat is on the official register.

Where whale-watching trips leave from

Puerto Colón, inside Costa Adeje, is home to more authorised whale-watching boats than any other harbour in Tenerife: large catamarans, sailing boats and small fast boats. Los Gigantes boats sail under the cliffs and towards Masca, and rarely collect from hotels. Los Cristianos has a handful of boats next to the ferry port, and Las Galletas several smaller ones further east.

Check that the boat is authorised, not just the company

The Spanish government keeps a register of the boats authorised to watch cetaceans (MITECO register). It lists boats individually and separates those allowed inside the protected Teno-Rasca area from those that must stay outside it. When an operator names its boat, we check it against the register and show the date. Turismo de Tenerife also runs a voluntary whale-watching quality charter; signing it is a commitment by the company, not an inspection of each trip.

Small boat or catamaran: which trip suits you?

  • Small fast boats (often with a marine biologist) spend most of the time looking for animals, usually for two to three hours, with fewer people on board.
  • Catamarans and yachts carry more people, often add a swim stop and food, and last three to five hours.

For trips that are more about the coast than the animals, see boat trips.

Questions people ask

Which harbours do whale-watching trips leave from?

From the south and west coasts. In the official register (file dated 15 October 2026, consulted on 21 October 2026), Puerto Colón in Costa Adeje had the largest number of authorised boats, followed by Las Galletas, Los Gigantes and Los Cristianos. None of the listed boats had a northern home port.

How do I know if a boat is authorised?

The Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition (MITECO) publishes the register of companies and boats authorised to watch cetaceans. It also shows which boats may enter the protected Teno-Rasca area. We note the boat name and the date we checked the register on each card where the operator names its vessel.

Can I do whale watching if I am staying in Puerto de la Cruz?

Yes, but the boat leaves from the south or west. A few operators send a coach to the north on set days; otherwise you need to get to the harbour yourself. The Puerto de la Cruz page lists the options we have checked.

How long are the trips?

From about two hours on small fast boats to four or five hours on catamarans that add a swimming stop and a meal. Longer trips are not a guarantee of more sightings; they usually add a stop in a bay such as Masca.

What is the best month to see whales in Tenerife?

Short-finned pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins are seen off the south-west coast all year. The information we have checked does not point to a best month, so choose the trip by harbour, boat and length rather than by season.

How likely is it to see whales in Tenerife?

We have not found a reliable sighting rate, and a sighting is never certain. Some operators set a policy for it: for example, Whale Watch Tenerife offers a free repeat trip if no animals are seen. Check each operator’s own conditions before booking.

What is the best whale-watching tour in Tenerife?

The one that leaves from a harbour near you, on a boat that is on the official register, at a length that suits you: a small fast boat if you only want the animals, a catamaran if you also want a swim and a meal. The list on this page is ordered by how complete our checked information is, not by a ranking of operators.
